Date: Thu, 1 Oct 2009 11:37:00 -0700 (PDT) From: S. Emerson Subject: Biost 514/517: Mail list and reminders I am using this email message just to test the listserv and to remind you of a couple points: 1) The Friday discussion section is held in the same room as lecture. (For a couple weeks it had been changed to another room and just recently changed back.) 2) In discussion sections this week I am going over the use of Stata to answer the homework questions. People from the Monday section are welcome to come on Friday if they want to see this material earlier. 3) I did record my presentation from Wednesday discussion section, and it is now posted on the course web pages. I will also record the Friday session (with perhaps better screen resolution--I will try at any rate). It will be posted Friday afternoon. 4) The class web page has a link to additional Stata material as prepared by Prof. Jim Hughes of the Biostat Dept. The link will take you to his Biost 511 web pages, which do require you to supply your UW NetID. His material will largely be reflective of Stata v10, because that is what the HSLIC is still running. 5) As soon as I get a copy of Stata v11, I will be trying to consolidate the differences between the versions. In general, you can get Stata to recognize commands from an earlier version by typing: version 8 (all the version 8 commands you want to run) To return to, say, version 11 you would then type version 11 (You probably do not want to return to version 11 if you are operating version 10) 6) The lecture from Wednesday was also recorded and has been posted. I note that I use a Flash format that includes bookmarks so you can jump to slides having particular titles. This only works after you have buffered a large part of the file-- something that may take a couple minutes. If you try to jump too early, the browser tends to get hung up, at least when I have tried it (I am not the most patient of people.) Let me know if you perceive any problems with any of the recordings. 7) Copies of the PowerPoint slides for lectures are posted on the class web pages. These will not be handed out in class. If you want paper copies, you will need to download and print them. I will typically have them posted several lectures in advance. I do note that some lectures may spill over from one class to the next, so dates are approximate. Scott ##################################################################### Scott S.
